Barnardo's Rescues: Waifs and Strays. Summing up, the Rev. James Marchant wrote in the early twentieth century, Barnardo's work grew with amazing rapidity, both at home and in Canada, until the waif and destitute children in his daily charge numbered about They were allowed to come to Australia on the condition they worked as domestic staff for at least two years after their arrival. Dr Barnardo's was originally located at Scarborough House, Kogarah but in moved to a mansion called Melrose at Ashfield.

That house was renamed Barnardo House. It was a receiving home and served as a home for boys and girls who were on holidays, in between employment or convalescing from illness. By was referred to as a Training Home and was for girls only. According to an April advertisement, from Barnardo House girls were 'drafted into selected good homes for domestic duties. In , the Barnardo's farm training school at Mowbray Park, Picton was opened. The school was initially for boys and girls aged six to fifteen years, but was later used entirely for boys.

It closed in , and was replaced by a smaller farm school at Scone on the Upper Hunter River, which trained boys aged fifteen to sixteen years in farming skills. Edward ran away from home and joined a ship which foundered near the Western Islands, now known as the Azores. I was stabbed in the neck and left for dead. A Sudanese soldier disguised me as an Arab and removed me to Dhurman. I remained there for seven months, when I was seized by Arabs and sold as a slave.

After having been so disposed of two or three times, I eventually reached Alexandria, whereupon my owner gave me my liberty. Elizabeth grew up in Liverpool, one of four sisters, and was employed for a short time as a child dancer.

The family moved to London, where their father abandoned them to take up a position as cook on a ship bound for Sydney. The period saw a number of homes opened and some later closed including Canberra, Ryde and Kiraville. The period since the 's has seen an emphasis on family-based placements. There are now no children's homes for children under twelve.

There has been an increased effort to find permanent solutions for children within their own family or if not possible, with substitute families or independent living.

With the establishment of the management team in there has been a concerted effort to expand services which prevented entry to care. Each of the four Centres has a range of support services, including crisis and respite foster care, semi-supported accommodation, childcare, visiting services groups and youth support.
